Homerton Local Info
Homerton (E9) is situated in the London Borough of Hackney. The London Borough of Hackney was created in 1965 by the amalgamation of the metropolitan boroughs Hackney, Stoke Newington and Shoreditch and has a long history stemming back to Anglo Saxon times. It is thought that the original town gains its name from the Anglo Saxon word haccun (to kill with a sword or axe) and ey meaning river, indicating a battle may have taken place on the River Lea. As part of its millennium project the London Borough of Hackney is undergoing regeneration, and high rised flats are now replaced with attractive housing, making the area a more desirable place to live. The many art centers including the Clowns Gallery Museum, Institute of International Visual Art, and local East End Galleries are often housed in what were once wealthy, Victorian businessmensРІР‚в„ў homes, and is quickly becoming one of the cultural centers of London. Homerton is home to Chats Palace arts centre, named after the nearby Chatsworth Road. Chats Palace has presented and encouraged a wide variety of music, comedy, theatre, photography, carnival, disability arts, dance and transgressive performance. Homerton is served by the Homerton University Hospital, an NHS foundation trust hospital. Although this has been a rather depressed area of Hackney, itself a poor borough, Homerton's prospects are brightening. The arrival of the Channel Link at nearby Stratford, coupled with the London Summer Olympics, which will take place nearby in 2012, may well spell a revival in its fortunes.
